Social and Emotional Needs of Gifted Learners by Duke TIP
For our first session, we will simply meet here on line. You can view this anytime between now and March 31st when we are together. Follow this page and you should be prepared for our first session together.
My name is Michael Elder and I serve as the Director of Academic Innovation for Onslow County Schools. One of my favorite and most challenging parts of this role is advancing an already robust AIG program. I look forward to learning along with you in this professional development.
To help us each get on the same page, watch this video and jot down a few notes. It will help us throughout this professional development.

One thing I would like for us to think about throughout this professional development is, "How can I apply what I am hearing, seeing, reading, discussing in my classroom or at my school?" It is easier to talk in the abstract, but when we work to apply then we know we are engaged.
Our upcoming dates (some of which will be held online like this) are Monday, March 24; Monday, March 31; Monday, April 7; Monday, April 28 ; Monday, May 5 ; Monday, May 12.
There are three main areas of focus to this professional development:
Consider the pros and cons of being gifted and how this impacts students socially and emotionally. Read this blog and jot down a few thoughts for when we are together in session 2: http://www.byrdseed.com/10-facts-about-social-emotional-needs-of-the-gifted/
SENG is a national group known for its resources and advocacy for gifted students. Check out SENG's website and choose an area of interest at http://www.sengifted.org/. If that is too broad of a task, narrow it to looking for one resource under the resources tab that you might be able to use with your students or their parents.
I look forward to seeing each of you on Monday, March 31st in Meeting Room 1 at the Central Office!
