NC Governor's School
{From http://www.ncgovschool.org/overview/}
The Governor's School of North Carolina is a five-week summer residential program for intellectually gifted high school students, integrating academic disciplines, the arts, and unique courses on each of two campuses. The curriculum focuses on the exploration of the most recent ideas and concepts in each discipline, and does not involve credit, tests, or grades.
The Governor's School is the oldest statewide summer residential program for academically or intellectually gifted high school students in the nation. The program, which is open to rising seniors only, with exceptions made for rising juniors in selected performing/visual arts areas, is located on two campuses of up to 305 students each: Governor's School West at Salem College in Winston-Salem (begun in 1963), and Governor's School East at Meredith College in Raleigh (begun in 1978). The program is administered by the Public Schools of North Carolina, the State Board of Education, and the Department of Public Instruction through the Exceptional Children Division. A Board of Governors, appointed by the State Board of Education, acts as an advisory body.

October 19 Message:
Good morning, Thank you all for getting your Governor’s School nominee names in and doing such an amazing job of ensuring that students know of this opportunity. That takes extra work and I appreciate you making it happen. Academic Nominees: All of our academic slots have been claimed at this point. If you have a student back out and you are not going to use that academic slot, please let me know ASAP as we have schools who have asked for more academic nominees. Arts Nominees: In the arts category, it looks like we have 11 more slots where we can nominate students (not counting the unlimited entries). So, if you have arts candidates, please encourage them to apply and just let me know so I will be expecting their packet. Interview Schedule: We will plan to follow the same interview schedule for academic candidates as we did last year. A copy of that schedule is below. The interview team will have community members as well as district level staff. Please let you students know that they are already a Governor’s School selection and that this interview is simply a chance for our community to hear from amazing kids. Each interview will last 10 minutes and be held at the Central Office in the Family Education Center. Just a reminder that we only interview the academic students because the arts students have a separate audition with Governor’s School. Some year we will find time to interview them all. That would be amazing!
Unlimited Nomination Categories:

One thing I always look forward to is receiving the information regarding the NC Governor’s School opportunity for our students. Our school counselors play a critical role in finding, informing, and nominating students each year. In addition, we appreciate the support of principals, AIG Specialists, Arts Teachers, and so many more. Onslow County Schools has been allocated 20 academic nominations and 28 performing/visual arts nominations this year. Those allocations have been divided across each of our high schools based on student enrollment. Attached to this email you will find many more details including your school’s allotment in each category and the timeline. This information and all updates, forms, and videos will be stored on our website (http://onslowaig.weebly.com/governors-school.html) so that you always have access. If you have any questions, please ask and know that we are all learning together. Remember, a student does not have to be identified as gifted to be considered for the NC Governor’s School. However, each student does have to have a qualifying achievement score as outlined in the nomination packet. We are excited to host a NC Governor’s School Informational Night on Thursday, October 5th. Anyone interested is encouraged to attend and hear directly from our NC Governor’s School leaders. |

Arts Candidate Audition Update: December 2016NC Governor’s School Arts Candidate Update December 27, 2016
NC Governor’s School Audition Information: http://www.ncgovschool.org/nomination/ Onslow County Schools Governor’s School Page: http://onslowaig.weebly.com/governors-school.html For NC Governor’s School candidates in the arts auditions complement the performing/visual arts nominees' applications which have already been submitted. Auditions are required for consideration of an arts position by the NC Governor’s School selection committee. Saturday, February 11
*Alternate Audition Processes (not available for Dance)- If a student cannot attend the in-person audition for any predetermined reason (e.g., schedule conflict, distance/travel concerns, finances, etc.), an alternate audition option will be available. The alternate will be the production and YouTube posting of a video (by the school only, not by the student or parent) according to prescribed instructions. The student's school must submit an official form that makes the alternate request and assures the school's agreement to produce the video appropriately. Both the in-person and alternate auditions are structured and rigorous; neither provides a selection advantage. More information, including the request form, will be posted to the NC Governor’s School website in early January. NOTE: This alternate audition option will be available for Choral Music, Instrumental Music, Theater and Visual Art, but not Dance. The format of the Dance audition does not allow for a video recording. Instead, to accommodate needs, two in-person Dance auditions are being offered. Finally, each performing/visual arts nominee will receive a letter in early to mid-January with preparation instructions and specific reporting times and locations. Once students receive their letter, they may contact the NC Governor’s School office directly with requests (e.g., to change from a morning to an afternoon audition time).
